Kafka's, The Penal Colony really ties this beautiful home together
Great home makeover. The apartment look spacious and organized to a tee.
Great job. All the hard work and planning really paid off.
Cabinet source would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
@Annoya: The cabinet source is in the article. I believe they were custom built by Mr. Bartenschlager.
I love it - makes me want to get a small 1 BR and do the same thing :) But wouldn't it make better sense to build the shelving/cabinets all the way up to the ceiling?
I love crisp and clean. Uncluttered space brings serenity to the space. I like that the cabinet don't go all the way to the ceiling. It offers the option to display a prized possession or two!
Just a question: What in this makeover did cost 17.000$? There are a few cabinets from IKEA with paint on them in this "kitchen"?
Dear Alex If you had looked at the photos and read the article carefully you would have known about other construction details contributed to the overall $17,000 cost such as demolition, removing floor tiles, refinishing existing wood floor found underneath said tiles, new appliances, plumbing fixtures, backsplash tiles, cabinet and Corian countertop fabrication & installation services among other details. And if you've ever read the Ikea kitchen catalog carefully, you would have known that Ikea doesn't and didn't make the cabinets installed in this project. Further reading of the Dwell article would have revealed the name of the German born cabinetmaker hired by the architect for this specific task. "Why custom cabinetry when it looks just like painted Ikea" asks Alex? The primary reason is for a such a small space spanning kitchen and living room, customization is the only way to make everything fit. Off the shelf items come in certain sizes and if they work, it's great as one can save some money, but if nothing fits then custom is the only viable solution.
