A Vintage Dining Room in Falmouth, England

“It’s far more satisfying to give new life to an old object than to just pick something from a catalog,” says Kathryn Tyler, an interior designer based in the UK. For over a decade, Tyler has been scouring and collecting vintage finds from local thrift stores and websites. The dining room in Tyler's home in Falmouth, England, plucked from our Interior Design issue, is a shining example that holds the designer's bric-à-brac—a trio of black bowls and a $30 three-pieced wooden table surrounded by a set of 1950s Carl Jacobs Jason chairs Tyler snagged on eBay for $400. A graphic Ellsworth Kelly poster mounted on the painted white brick wall ($3!), brings a little color into the otherwise neutral room.

Kitchen We Love: Catskills Farmhouse

A self-taught designer with a respect for both new and old embarked upon a solo mission to resuscitate a 19th-century homestead in upstate New York. In the process, he carved out a stunningly modern kitchen in the rear of the rehabilitated 1820s farmhouse. He opened up the back wall with a facade of skyscraper glass and added contemporary finishes (like a striking Cor-Ten fireplace column and wraparound granite countertops) to complement older touches like salvaged ceiling beams and a farmhouse sink.

A Minimalist Pop Art Living Room in the Houston Heights

"There is a richness to simplicity, but unless you get the details right, simple can sometimes just look cheap," says Matthew Ford, one half of Shade House Development and construction firm, Esplanade Homes, both specializing in green building. Such is not the case with this Barbara Hill-designed living room, housed in one of the newly-built row houses in the Houston Heights, featured in our issue dedicated to modern affordable homes. Vintage furniture like a turquoise curved sofa with an exposed wooden base, pair of mid-century polished stone-topped side tables from Houston's Reeves Antiques, and a sturdy wooden Pringle-chipped chair gather around the center, while a layered birch Pop Art wall piece by Mitch McGee gives the all-white living room a little more punch.

An Alpine Bedroom in the Mies van der Rohe-Designed Lafayette Park

Inside the storied Lafayette Park—the first urban-renewal project in the United States—in Detroit, Michigan, designed by German-American mid century architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, from our December/January 2009 issue dedicated to mid-century renovations, lies a renovated townhouse chock full of art, vintage furniture, and various ephemera. Seen here, its residents Toby Barlow and Keira Alexandra lounging in their colorful bedroom. An oversized landscape mural of the famed Alps cleverly doubles its duty as both an art piece and headboard. A blocky patchwork quilt by Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate Abigail Newbold tucks in the design couple (he's a creative director, she a graphic designer), while various reading material and a vintage telephone sit on each of his/her bedside table. A Bright Work Space in Milwaukee

Back in December 2010 we profiled furniture designers Vincent and Paul Georgeson of Misewell. Not only did we love their designs but we were also smitten with their work space. Growing up in southeastern Wisconsin, the brothers used to hang out in their father’s basement woodshop, fascinated by the process of building things. Now they spend their days in a beautiful light-filled studio, surrounded by their own designs (and dog Penny).
