Light-filled Living Room in Brooklyn

Architect Jeff Sherman, of Delson or Sherman Architects, has more guts and gall than your average home renovator. In 2000, strapped by a “very finite budget,” he bought a wrecked row house in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, that had been used as an illegal breeding kennel. Over the next ten years, working as his own general contractor and builder, he transformed the scariest building on his block into a high-design home, all for about $100 per square foot. One of our favorite rooms of the house is the bright, colorful and comfy living room. Here, Daphne the dog keeps company with a Case Study Day Bed from Modernica, a LCM chair by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, and a painting by the Brooklyn artist Joyce Kim.

A Ranch House Kitchen Renovation

For their lakeside retreat in northwestern Michigan, Keith and Mary Campbell renovated a 1970s ranch house to include a spacious kitchen-dining room. Clad in a warm mix of oak, pine, and maple, the modern home nods to vernacular cabin culture, though the horizontal layout and irregular plank widths add a sophisticated twist. A black granite island anchors the space, which is decorated with classic lighting and contemporary furniture. See the full resource list below.

A Minimalist Bathroom in Los Angeles

For the bathroom inside a renovated Hollywood bungalow, architect Noah Walker used a simple palette of gray and white tile, black countertops, and stainless steel fixtures. "I love minimal bathrooms with natural light, so less is more, and pay attention to the details," he advises. "We wanted to keep the space within the spirit of the house, which was an austerely masculine space with a warm but dark palette. I am a big fan of using dark ceilings to pull the eye to the outside so we chose matte black for the ceiling and a similar dark color for the floors. The penny tiles were a great way to add detail to the walls without them becoming visually cluttered."
