A Modern Kitchen Remodel in Austin

Built in 1950, Lloyd and Kirsten Thompson's Austin house had "some inherent mid-century charm and good flow," says architect J.C. Schmeil of Merzbau Design Collective. An addition, however, had been poorly done in the 70's—it was out of level, uninspiring, and made no connection to the backyard. So the couple hired Schmeil to remodel the addition, hoping to better connect the living area to the kitchen, dining area, and lounge; and to open the lounge to the outdoors. The result is a thoroughly modern space that looks as good as it functions. Click through the slideshow to learn more. And check out Dwell.com's Rooms section for lots more kitchen inspiration.

A Magenta-Accented Sustainable Bathroom in Phoenix

With its glowing magenta ceiling, floor, and walls, the lavatory's shower looks more like a room meant for a Gaspar Noé film than a place to spruce up one's hygiene (the house it resides in is called Xeros). A small portrait painting replaces the usual bathroom suspect—the mirror—and sanded oriented strand board (OSB), a waste material typically used in framing, outfits the blocky, narrow quarter. See the rest of this sustainable steel mesh-clad live/work space in Phoenix, Arizona in our issue dedicated to green homes here.

A Modern Kitchen Renovation in New York

Boris Dramov and Bonnie Fisher, principals of San Francisco-based ROMA Design Group recently completed a gut renovation for their daughter, Dana Dramov. The 2,500-square-foot live-work space located in Manhattan's Flatiron district boasts a sleek new kitchen, complete with Arclinea cabinets; appliances by Gaggenau, Sub-Zero, and Miele; furniture by Indecasa; granite countertops; and oak floors. Much like the San Francisco renovation by Abigail Turin, this design features an all-black room that contrasts with neighboring bright, white spaces. We here at Dwell are fans of how a simple, yet dramatic, move can make a strong statement.

A Surfer's Small Modern Backyard

We've called out our outdoor furniture favorites before, but the deft use of these Loop chairs by Willy Guhl for Eternit puts them squarely on our list. Matt Jacobson and Kristopher Dukes's small house in Manhattan Beach, California, makes their extra bit of outdoor space—a 15-by-30-foot backyard—all the more critical. Along with the help of architect Michael Lee, they've outfitted the space in concrete, bamboo, ipe, and stones, alongside a modest suite of modern furnishings.
