Following our kitchen roundups shouting the joy of wood and celebrating the calm of all-white, here are eight home kitchens that dip into bright color.
In South African architect Gregory Katz's home, the galley-style kitchen with its bold use of color was his wife Caryn’s choice. She fell in love with the name of a paint swatch called Canary Yellow and then left it to Gregory to fine-tune the exact hue to paint the MDF cabinets. Photo by Elsa Young.
Nearly 40 years after Harry Bates designed this small home in Amagansett, he and design partner Paul Masi returned for a renovation. They salvaged the 12-inch cypress boards from the old deck and with them created a cohesive look throughout. In the kitchen, the aged wood is accented by new, bright-red Ikea cabinets. One of the original colorful modernist kitchens is found at the Eero Saarinen-designed Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. Alexander Girard applied his love of bright color and patterned motifs to everything in the house from drapes to napkins to tile. A mosaic tile wall softens the laboratory-like effect of the glossy kitchen cabinets. Photo by Leslie Williamson.
The saturated hues of the Devis-Purdy house, designed by Linda Taalman in Los Angeles, took quite a bit of mixing in order to coat the stucco walls of the kitchen and living room. The team used Benjamin Moore American Cheese 2019-40.2 for the kitchen walls, blended with a custom-matched lacquer concrete stain. The contractor then added yellow color pigment to the stucco mix before applying both the base and finish coats on walls. Photo by Lisa Romerein.
Bruce Bolander's Beauvoir House in Las Flores Canyon in Malibu expands the home's area with expansive windows and bright punches of color. "The color was influenced by the new growth on the chaparral that surrounds the house. The house and kitchen are both very small; the house is about 1600 square feet." The green laminate cabinetry is a Bolander custom design.
For the Garden House in Viksberg, Sweden, Tham & Videgård Arkitekter plotted the living quarters as a steep triangle with a bright-green kitchen in one corner. The green laminate countertops by Abet Laminati contrasts the raw plywood cabinets.
