By taking advantage of economies of scale, a Houston native and a pair of mod-minded developers team up to create nine affordable row houses in the Houston Heights. In this living room, designer Barbara Hill opted for vintage furniture like a turquoise sofa and pair of mid-century side tables from Houston’s Reeves Antiques. Photo by Jack Thompson.

When they want to escape the mayhem of city life in Chicago, Diane Pascal and Thomas Richie retreat to their low-profile getaway in Hennepin, Illinois, a town where agriculture and ecology are still a part of the locals’ common knowledge. The rear of the main room features floor-to-ceiling glass panels that frame a view of a shortgrass prairie and the woods behind the house. A suspended Fireorb echoes the vertical line of the trees and Ligne Roset sofas offer a place to recline and soak up the landscape.
