Now that winter is long gone, weʼre looking forward to spending more time outdoors in our front garden—which doubles as an outdoor room. To make it more inviting, weʼve decided to replace the gravel between the pavers with creeping thyme.

In this exclusive series for Dwell.com, Linda Taalman of Taalman Koch Architecture tracks the hands-on renovation of her and her partner's live-work space in Hollywood, California. Week 10: A Room Outdoors.

We also went to “Tomato Mania,” held at a nursery in Fillmore because it is perfect time for planting tomatoes. Our daughter, Oleana, requested some snapdragons and strawberry plants too. While we were in Fillmore, we visited our friends who recently moved from L.A. to a 15 acre orchard. We came back with about 100 pieces of fruit from their trees: avocados, lemons, oranges, and grapefruits.

Grain, a small furniture store in Atwater Village, makes a nice outdoor table: powder-coated steel legs and frame with carefully selected 2x6 boards for the tops. Itʼs nice and simple and matches the aesthetic of the Craig Ellwood apartment building, and will let us fully exploit our outdoor room.

Although she doesnʼt mind picking up worms and bugs, Oleana was a little intimidated by the mud on Momʼs hands from planting creeping thyme.

We also bought some beautiful new pots for our herbs (and a squash). They are 100% recycled material and have a nice “lava” sort of feel.

Weʼve also been working on the boundary between indoor and outdoor. Our longtime friend Elodie Blanchard of Elastic Co. designed and fabricated these curtains for us. The design is a combination of the Douglas-fir tones of the wood in the house and the black steel elements such as the sliding glass doors.
