A renovation shouldn’t be confined to the interior of a house. Landscape design is just as important to the modernization of a home.

After the initial overhaul of her 1983 ranch house in Charlottesville, Virginia, Elizabeth Birdsall enlisted Anna Boeschenstein of Grounded Landscape Architecture & Design to design a versatile outdoor space. Boeschenstein created a series of ipe decks that form pathways around the two main buildings of the house and provide platforms that combat the site’s steep and complex grades.

Having completed the restoration of their 1958 Eichler in Sunnyvale, California, a couple hired Monterey-based landscape designer Bernard Trainor to transform the irregularly-shaped lot. Trainor divided the yard into four “garden rooms”: an entry courtyard with a fire pit for entertaining, a traditional backyard with a lawn and a dining area, a meditative space just off the master bedroom, and a side garden near the guesthouse.

While the remodel of their Los Angeles home was in progress, Eric Garcetti and Amy Elaine Wakeland acquired two steep, unbuildable adjoining lots. With the help of Sean Femrite Environmental Design Studio, they transformed this 19,000-square-foot yard into a full-blown productive garden.
