Associate Editor Miyoko Ohtake: For the past few months, I’ve been in a Japan state of mind. This December, my sister and I are heading to the archipelago of our ancestors—our father’s grandparents came from Japan to North American in the early 1900s. We’ve been busy doing what my colleague Aaron Britt has dubbed “Japlanning”: Japan-trip planning. On our itinerary thus far includes tasting beer in Sapporo, visiting relatives in Tokyo, and staying in a ryokan or two in Kyoto. Here’s what I’ve been eyeing in preparation for take off.

get some warm socks if you decide to visit temples in Kyoto/Nikko. removing shoes makes for cold feet
Thanks, Maurice! Duly noted!
My wife has a few of the Orly Kiely notebooks stacked up - an affordable way to enjoy her otherwise expensive designs. I have the Gorillapod and am not so crazy about it. I purchased the smaller, lightest weight version for a backpacking trip but my digital SLR (one of the smaller, lighter Nikons) weighed it down. You have to get one of the bulkier, heavier versions to stand up to anything more than a small point and shoot.
If you need any Japanese cameras sent to the office for you trip, just let us know. We love your mag!
Great little piece! Some of the stuff looks really cool and functional! When I was younger my parents had that same alarm clock! Instead of getting a gorrilapod you should learn to say, "Will you please take a picture of me?" in Japanese - this will save space in your bag. Have fun in Japan!!!
Thanks for all the great comments! Anonymous: Great to hear that your wife likes the Orla Kiely notebooks and thanks for the tip on the Gorillapod. Nic: All set with camera gear but thanks! Elizabeth: I decided to treat myself to an early Christmas present and picked up the Braun clock last week. It's probably a good idea to brush up on my Japanese!
