South Africa: Design Indaba 2010

The annual Design Indaba Expo, held last weekend in Cape Town, South Africa, focuses solely on domestic talents. Some of these designs are available in American outlets like Anthropologie, Bergdorf Goodman, and Etsy. Here are a few of our favorites.

T.W.A.K. Accessories

In Afrikaans, "twak" is slang for "talking rubbish," but also refers to trees--perfect wordplay for vases fashioned from reclaimed wood. Working with partridge and wild mango wood in Mozambique, the forest concession plants four trees for every one that it fells.

Wool Planters

With the idea of a felted bed in mind, Ronél Jordaan started making tiny prototypes that turned out to be perfect for planters. The wool nests retain water--ideal in the hot Johannesburg sun--as well as integrity of shape after six months in her garden.
indaba africa Raw Ikonik square

Ikonik

Peet van Straaten says he had long wanted to reinterpret the lockers typically found in American schools and South African mines in wood rather than metal. Ikonik, a modular system made by a CNC machining process, is available either clean or pre-graffitid.
indaba africa Bousquet Creations square

Canimoorphic Lamp

French-born, Johannesburg-based sculptor Philippe Bousquet says he subscribes to an "extreme notion of green design." Other than the LED light and wires, his caninomorphic lamps are made entirely of found parts--vacuum cleaners and car headlights are fair game.
indaba africa Greymeta square

Grey Meta Kiaat Table

Born and raised in Soweto, William Morafo is a mechanical engineer-cum-designer who plans both power stations and wooden furniture. This table, made of kiaat wood from Mpumalanga, satisfies his desire for a floating shelf.
indaba africa Skinny LaMinx 2 herds tea towel square

Skinny Laminx Tea Towels

Growing up, Heather Moore says she eschewed South Africa's icons: the protea, the color orange (prominent in the apartheid-era flag), and cave paintings. But she's come to embrace them all, and includes modern interpretations of ancient animal drawings as part of her textile collection. Tea towels are a perennial favorite.

Lab Light

The public voted via text message for the lab light to win the distinction of Most Beautiful Object in South Africa. Andrea Kleinloog visited a laboratory in search of a vintage Fisher base, which she finished with black steel and brass.
imiso scarrified indaba square

Scarrified Collection

Sculptor Andile Dyalvine draws on his traditional Xhosa upbringing in the Eastern Cape for his "Scarified" collection. Now based in Cape Town, Dyalvine is working on an initiative to bridge foreign interest in township tourism and traditional craftsmanship without succumbing to kitsch.
