Light it Up

There's much to be gleaned from the September 2010 issue's "Lighting 101", from the horrors of light pollution to the joys of organic LEDs. Thus inspired, we thought we'd present our most illuminating examples of modern pendants and sconces.

Le Klint's classic sculptural pendants are offered in a variety of hand-folded shapes. Designed by architect Poul Christiansen in the late 1960s, the style holds up to date, and the PVC material is easy to clean.

Soft Tools Pendants

Using the tools in their furniture workshop to create something a little softer than stools and low tables, the Ribic boys behind Objeti—brothers Joseph and John Jr., along with their father John Sr.—have created this collection of hand-pressed felt pendants. Each of the three shapes is named after a different type of device: Chamfer, Radius, and Ball. The company, which just recently launched, won an Editors' Choice award at ICFF this year.

Designed by Ferran Freixa, fine strips of poplar wood are woven together to create a framework which constitutes the shade. The shade is supported by two metal circles allowing light to shine towards the ceiling and floor.

All Light Closed Wall Sconce

This isn’t a form that asserts itself and, in a way, the fixture disappears. I rather like that. It’s almost like no form at all. What I really appreciate is that you can have it two ways: with the cover off or on. It produces a lot of light but doesn’t blind you. But you’d have to be sure that bugs don’t get inside it; if they did, it would look terrible. —Richard Schultz

TR15 Pendant Light

Self-taught Danish designer Tom Rossau is a firm believer in coincidence and enhancing the element of play in all of his designs. So it should be no surprise that his latest lamps have had some fun with our idea of what a lampshade should look like. He’s split the familiar lampshade shape into three adjustable sections and covered them all in his favorite material – thin birch veneer. The result casts a warm glow through natural wood and gives you the ability to focus the light where it’s needed. The lamp also comes in floor and table lamp variations. Beam Pendant

Beam is a pendant lamp with a twist. With its comfortable, soft working light, it can be pointed in any direction, providing an oversized beam precisely where it’s needed and creating points of visual interest in larger spaces. Beam works well in clusters with its three standard lengths, and comes in matte white, black, or red. Custom lengths and colors can be special ordered. Beam was designed by Johan Carpner for Swedish lighting company Zero. Zero is distributed throughout the world and in the US by MOD – Modern Objects + Design. Jeremy Pyles Bella Lighting

Bella Pendant

A recent lunchtime wander to San Francisco boutique Area (which is right around the corner from Dwell HQ) gave us a bit of design-envy to chew on. The impeccably-curated shop is chock-full of beautiful things, and a brief browse around on the site brought us to this handblown pendant from NY designer Jeremy Pyles. He's got quite a few different styles, all equally lovely.

Artek's A110 pendant has been shining brightly since it was designed by Finnish founder Alvar Aalto in 1952. The lacquered aluminum lamp directs focused rays—like a spotlight for your coffee or dining room table—and is available in black or white. YLighting carries this, and the equally enduring A338.

Atto 5000 was introduced at the Stockholm Furniture Fair earlier this year, one of interior architect Seppo Koho's latest designs for Finnish lighting company Secto Design. Handmade by skilled craftsmen using Finnish birch, this bulbous slatted pendant lamp's simple shape evokes classic Scandinavian style.

We're not sure which the PXL reminds us of more: Panton and Pantone, or clowns and carnivals. The fact that its lacquered aluminum bands are upbeat and eye-catching, however, is without a doubt.
