Holiday Gift Guide

Etsy Picks

Managing Editor Michele Posner: I get to see a lot of places, pads, and products while reviewing and planning the pages of the magazine. Most people here know that I also love to knit and cook and sew, so while I indeed lust after Florence Knoll settees and Russel Wright coffee pots like a good Dwellian, I also have a place in my heart for the DIYers who sell their original wares on Etsy. It's a great place to find new, inspiring design objects and jewelry ("regretsy" items aside) for the people in your life who think they've seen everything.

Split Pod Vase

Oaklander Whitney Smith's clean, pretty pieces and art nouveau–inspired glazes have been my go-to wedding gifts for a while now. My favorites are the plucked-from-nature Pod vase and the delicate dogwood blossoms that adorn her bowls and cake stands.

Green Bamboo Postage Clock

Do you know someone who needs to be told what time it is? Whether they prefer Star Time, Hammertime, Morris Day and the Time, or the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Keith Moore of PILOTdesign's got the goods to make sure your loved ones are up to the minute with his Honeycomb, Big Drip, Ovaltime, and Postage clocks. Awesome time.

Relic Necklace

Lately I've been mildly obsessed with hammered silver. The basic shapes combined with the organic texture of the tooled metal makes me want to walk on the moon in Santa Fe, if such a thing only existed. Etsy is brimming with neo-Vulcans turning out toothsome hand-forged earrings, bracelets, rings, cufflinks, pendants, you name it.

French New Wave Canvas Bag

Twelve clams gets your sweetie a portable bit of the Nouvelle Vague. Great stuff for the Belmondo buff in your life. I'm eyeing the Anna Karina/Bande à part one for myself, so you'd better hurry.

Artisan Candles

Hard to resist an egg carton filled with a half-dozen brightly hued and heavenly scented bougies made by these San Francisco folks. I also love the Sea Monster Stripes and Dots pillar candles in marine and seaweed shades—I'd like to light them up around my porch and drink mulled wine while they shine on.

The Curve of a Hip v.2 Woodcut

Azure Grackle's prints call Mariaelisa Leboroni of Xilocart to mind while having a distinct flavor all their own. Prints filled with organic forms, plant and animal life, and overlapping color washes range from a reasonable $18 and top out at $90.

Moonlight Vine Stocking

Sweet stockings and bellissimi bird ornaments are on offer from this Oregon-based designer. Anna Joyce puts a lively lilt on tradition by using graphic motifs on her mod-flavored holiday treats. Autumn Leaves and Tangerine Flower table runners also make great gifts for charming hostesses.
