Holiday Gift Guide

Creative Storage Solutions

We are suffering a shortage of good storage in our house at the moment: our bathroom miscellany is crammed into plastic drawers under the sink; magazines are strewn scattershot across our coffee table; laundry, lacking a proper receptacle, ends up in piles by the bed. This year, my holiday wish-list veers toward the practical and necessary—and, in the case of these eight storage solutions, beautiful to boot.

holiday gift guide askman caster table

Hans Sandgren Jacobsen Caster Table

This table is pricey, but so sleek and lovely. The black and white laminate-topped trays are removable and reversible, so you can change the look of the piece with a simple flip. The thin edge of the tray helps keep objects looking neat. I'd use this as a side table by our sofa—and during parties it can handily double as a mobile bar cart.
holiday gift guide Hoekstra kitchen organizer

Hoekstra Kitchen Organizer

How appealing is this tiny, incredibly useful kitchen cart? Designer Jan Hoekstra thought of everything: there are slots to store knives, a wooden cutting board, bins to hold unprepared foods, and hooks for pots and pans. I'd love to condense all our most-used kitchen implements into this single, sexy unit. Plus, bonus: it's on sale for half-off!
holiday gift guide neo basket

Crocheted Rubber Basket

I love these chunky, overscaled baskets, hand-crocheted out of rubber 'yarn' by an Italian collective of women. They come in small, medium, and large; the latter seems ideal for corralling the endless piles of magazines that threaten to take over our living room.
holiday gift guide ferm boxes

Tower of Boxes

I've been searching forever for a non-ugly jewelry box and always come up empty-handed. However, I recently stumbled onto this sweet, stackable trio of smoked oak boxes from Ferm Living, which fit the bill nicely. Finally—a clean, un-cutesy way to organize my tangle of rings, earrings and bracelets.
holiday gift guide felt bin

Felt Storage Bin

These 16-inch-by-16-inch felt bins are beautifully textured and perfectly flexible, in all senses: the soft sides are squeezable, and they're also great for containing everything from kid's toys to throw blankets. I can picture one on either side of our bed, catching books and slippers.
holiday gift guide herman miller enchord

Enchord Mobile Cabinet

Super-compact and super-good-looking, the Enchord Mobile Cabinet is like a miniature office on wheels. There's room to stash a printer, files, and all manner of office supplies. My favorite element is the cork-lined drawer, which comes with either a white or 'pesto'-colored front (I favor the green).
holiday gift guide uten.silo

Uten.Silo by Vitra

The plastic Uten.Silo, designed by Dorothe Becker and Ingo Maurer in the late 1960's, is the perfect thing to hang by our front door. The various molded compartments, clips, and hooks turn whatever you put there—keys, pens and notepads, makeup, wallets—into wall art. It comes in a black, red, and chrome version, but I like the classic white best.
holiday gift guide CB2 hamper

CB2 Laundry Hamper

Oh man—a nice-looking (and lidded! and affordable!) laundry hamper has been the second-most-difficult thing for me to hunt down, a close runner-up after the jewelry box (see above). Fortunately CB2 is here to ease my woes with this stout double-wall bamboo hamper. Two, please!
