Affordable Pop Art

One thing I am always asked about is where to find original art. Some of the earliest memories I have involve lining my bedroom walls with band posters, and I still carry that impulse with me when looking for pieces that are irreverent and a little rock-and-roll. Affordable art is everywhere and should not be intimidating. Here are a few of my favorites, all guaranteed to provide a punch of color without punching the wallet.

simboli zodiac poster aries square

Gerry and Joe Simboli Zodiac Posters

This husband-and-wife duo, based in Philly, designed these pop posters in 1969. They found some of the originals in their studio a few years back and decided to sell the limited stock they have on Etsy. Printed in 1969, the summer of love, and at only $175, they’re a piece of history and a major color statement.
simboli war poster square

Vintage Anti-War Poster from 1970

In addition to the Zodiac prints, the Simbolis also uncovered some antiwar posters they’d designed in 1970 in response to the Vietnam War. This design’s sentiment, unfortunately, remains relevant today.
andew cotton serigraph square

Andew Cotton Serigraphs

Hand-painted serigraphs for $30? Unique and, dare we say, cheap?
kii ahrens liza poster square

Kii Arens Lithograph

Camp and colorful posters, all limited edition, signed, and numbered. And only $60.
victore posters Instant Collection square

James Victore Instant Collection

This graphic artist teaches at SVA, is currently featured in The Museum of Modern Art, and has designed magazine covers for Time and The New York Times Magazine. His irreverent poster designs are not for everyone. But at $50 for an instant art collection; they certainly are within most budgets.
vintage airline poster square

Vintage Airline Posters

This Manhattan poster gallery has 35,000 in their vault. And yes, many are super expensive. But many are not. Foreign movie, airline, and product posters are some of the best at great prices.
rex ray wood adler

Rex Ray Wood Panel

This SF–based artist may have had a show at SFMoMA and, yes, his paintings are not affordable for most. But his wood panels, which are collages covered in resin, are equally, if not more, impressive. Considering the craftsmanship this technique requires over a print, and Ray's elevated profile, this one's a bit more than the others I found.
poster pat suzuki wolfgangs vault square

Vintage Band and Concert Posters

We all love music and have a favorite band or record. Another great way to find affordable art is to search for vintage band and concert posters. Wolfgang’s Vault has many from the 1950s through the 1990s.
house industries david dodde serigraph

This type foundry in Delaware is responsible for bringing Alexander Girard and Richard Neutra fonts to life. They also collaborated with David Dodde to print this limited-edition series of signed serigraphs.
