Supercooling Freezers—The Future of Refrigerators?

Manufacturers have added carbonation systems, fancy ice-makers, and video monitors to refrigerators, but the general idea of having two temperatures for the freezer and main unit have generally stayed the same for decades. Now, Mitsubishi has announced a line of refrigerators, including the MR-WX71Y and MR-WX61Y, that use a process called supercooling to chill food to three degrees below freezing. Available only in Japan, beginning August 2014, for $4,100.

  At that specific temperature, Mitsubishi, says, the nutrients and flavors of meat, fruits, and vegetables remain intact for up to seven days. The drawers also feature finely tuned supercooling sensors that can be set to a temperature optimal for leafy greens or fish.

  These new fridges also use a new type of polyurethane that’s thinner and lighter than that on traditional models, which means more room on the interior with a smaller overall footprint. For now, these refrigerators will only be available in Japan or via import by August 2014, but expect a variation to appear stateside soon.
