  COFFEE BREAK: HEATH CERAMICS AND BLUE BOTTLEHeath Ceramics recently opened a factory and retail location in San Francisco and partnered with Blue Bottle Coffee to open a cafe inside of the 60,000-square-foot former industrial laundry. Thanks to the keen design eye of Commune—who helped with the look and feel of the interiors—and structural wizardry of Charles Hemminger of hemmingerarchitects—who helped refine the architecture—Heath has a new home at 18th Street and Alabama befitting its wares.     COFFEE BREAK: HEATH CERAMICS AND BLUE BOTTLE

    Heath Ceramics recently opened a factory and retail location in San Francisco and partnered with Blue Bottle Coffee to open a cafe inside of the 60,000-square-foot former industrial laundry. Thanks to the keen design eye of Commune—who helped with the look and feel of the interiors—and structural wizardry of Charles Hemminger of hemmingerarchitects—who helped refine the architecture—Heath has a new home at 18th Street and Alabama befitting its wares.

And that's the whole point. This second outpost of Coffee Bar isn't trying to be like its neighborhood original where people spend lazy Sunday afternoons (or camp out all day on their laptops); it's a stage for the process of making an espresso drink.     San Francisco has its fair share of third-wave coffee so we jumped at the chance to visit one of the East Bay's newest offerings. On a pleasantly sleepy stretch of Solano Avenue, Berkeley-based Local 123 opened a cafe within Flowerland nursery.

  COFFEE BREAK: STOCKHOLM'S CAFE FOAMLocated in the Östermalm neighborhood of Stockholm, Cafe Foam channels "Spanish temperament with Scandinavian cool," according to its designers, local firm Note. Indeed, the interior features the prototypical Scandinavian blonde wood and spare detailing with splashes of magenta that evoke a more fiery feeling—an unexpected mashup as the latitudes (not to mention the design sensibilities) of Spain and Sweden are about as far flung as one can get in Europe.

Things that our memories smooth over post-construction, like frustrations and changes in plans, are still rampant. That never-ending argument over where to put the couch just isn’t funny yet. To capture this oft-forgotten phase, we checked in with San Francisco coffee company, Four Barrel, a few months before opening The Mill, their second cafe.  Courtesy of: Josey Baker
