As the Northeast braces for one of the worst storms in memory, we can't help but remember (and hope for the best for) all the fantastic houses we've featured in New England. Designed for hard climes, this quintet of modern homes from across the region are exemplars not only of the principles of sound architecture, but also testaments to how modernism isn't just for Californians. We love covering those six hardy states, from Mass. to Maine, and celebrate the way they've carried the torch of modern residential design.

Check out these four modern houses in Portland, Oregon next.

Modern geometric house with roof deck

This small suburban Massachusetts home previously had just a small screened-in porch as its only outside space. A generous roof deck atop the garage was a winning way to allow a survey of the neighborhood during Massachusetts’ Indian summers.

Architect Peter Cohen designed this spine-and-module home in Ellsworth, Maine for him and his wife, Sally. Seen here, the deck is sheltered from the neighbors’ view by Cohen’s bedroom to the right and the living room at left.

Architect Christopher Campbell carved out this modern North Haven retreat for a retired couple. “The house is like a sculpture, a piece of jazz, like a riff on harness."

Mid-century designer Jens Risom's A-framed prefab family retreat, located on the northern portion of Block island, is bordered by a low stone wall, an aesthetic element that appears throughout the land.
