Dwell joined forces with Pacific Standard Time to appeal to the architect—and child—within us all. The challenge was to construct a model of an original home inspired by iconic California mid-century modern architecture only using LEGO bricks. Now it's time to reveal the five finalists vying for the grand prize to be awarded at this year's Dwell on Design.
At Dwell we know that no space is complete without the right materials. But in today's modern world of myriad options, designing for your space involves some tough deliberation. So we teamed up with Caesarstone and invited you to share the ways you've used their surfaces in your spaces. Judges pored over the 320+ entries and selected the best from each of the four categories: Small Space, Kitchen and Bath, Commercial and Hospitality, and Unique Application. Out of a total of 323 entries received, 29 were selected as finalists and the final decision was left to popular vote. 7,000+ votes later, the winners of The Caesarstone Challenge are...
We joined James Hardie in the sandbox and tasked Dwellers to wow us with renderings of fantastical funhouses for the mini design enthusiasts in the making. Whether inspired by Bauhaus or Versailles, the challenge was to go wild and channel your inner child. With 366 total entries received, the competition was stiff. Judges selected the five finalists, but we left it to you, our audience of readers, to select the winner in live Facebook voting. Without further ado, the winner is...
We received 132 total entries that featured 118 individual landmarks deserving of preserving. We posted the entries for popular vote and watched the votes roll in. With 71,000 total votes it was a close race. However, there can be only one winner and voters and judges agreed that the Sub-Zero and Dwell Rethinking Preservation Contest grand prize winner is...
At Dwell we've always been fans of the bold prints by Finnish textile design house Marimekko and in honor of their 60th anniversary we toasted ten timeless prints and challenged you to vote on your favorite. With over 5,000 votes cast in just three short weeks, it was a close race between the iconic Unikko (Poppy) by Maija Isola and Lumimarja (Snowberry) by Erja Hirvi. Ultimately, the title of "favorite" went to Lumimarja so we went tet-a-tet with Erja to delve into her design inspirations.
Dwell and method, two arbiters of style that aim for pride of place on your shelves, dared you to defy us with your concepts for upcycling, recycling, rethinking, and deconstructing—beginning with your empty method bottles. We were looking for ideas that gave method product bottles and packages a sexy second lease on life and boy did you deliver. And the winner, chosen by popular vote, is...
In our World Views contest, we teamed up with Blurb and challenged our readers to share their view of the modern world. You heard our call and we were incredibly impressed by the hundreds of submissions that flooded in. We've decided to share a number of our personal favorites that, while they might not have won the prize, are certainly due more than just a high five.
All of the entries you see in the following slideshow are also featured in our first-ever photo book World Views. Of the hundreds of photos submitted we culled together the 3 winners and 62 honoroable mentions that jumped out at our judges. Check out the grand prize winner and two runners up here. Though the competition wrapped up, we hope that World Views has encouraged you to break out your cameras, get the creativity rolling, and take in old sites in a new light.
