Matthew Hilton

Matthew Hilton portrait

Matthew Hilton was born in Hastings in 1957. He graduated with a degree in Furniture Design from Kingston Polytechnic in 1979 when he started to design and manufacture a range of objects using low-tech casting techniques. From 1980 to 1984 Matthew worked as an industrial designer for the product design company Capa, London. In 1985 Matthew set up the Matthew Hilton Design Studio and started working for the British retailer and manufacturer SCP, situated in London's east end for whom he has designed a number of classics such as the Balzac chair, the Flipper and Antelope table. The studio has since expanded its practice, and is working with several more manufacturers.

Berwick High Back Armchair

Matthew Hilton looked to the work of industrial design legend Vico Magistretti to create this comfortable, clean-lined armchair for British brand SCP. Its European hardwood frame, natural ash glide leg and a host of upholstery options (shown here in Kvadrat Molly) make it a modern choice for lazy boys and girls alike.

Hepburn Sofa

We’re guessing this new modular sofa is named after an actress and not the town in Saskatchewan. Our assertion is further verified by the elegant and unusual X-patterned seams that crisscross the upholstery like an Oscar-worthy evening gown and the solid wood legs that elevate this seat like a pair of Salvatore Ferragamos.
