Snøhetta Gets Small-Scale with Røros-Tweed
One of the best booths at ICFF this year (see a bunch more roundups onsite and offsite here) was the insidenorway set-up featuring prototypes from young Norwegian designers, all curated by Paul Makovsky of Metropolis magazine. There we found some new work by architecture firm Snøhetta, whose designers delved into textile fabrication with the help of venerated wool company Røros-Tweed. We're used to seeing Snøhetta work on a grand scale, but the collaboration proves that they bring just as much rigor to everyday home goods. Here's a look at the ingenious blanket design by the firm's design team, led by Siri Warren.

The NoMad Hotel, New York
One block away from the scene-making New York outpost of the Ace Hotel, in a district mostly known for its wholesale garment industry, is a Beaux Arts showstopper anchoring the corner of Broadway and 28th Street. The recently-opened NoMad Hotel, distinct from the exterior owing to its giant cupola, is not just a coincidence but a companion property (and aesthetic foil) to the Ace. Both were developed by The Sydell Group in partnership with GFI Development, who hired Parisian designer Jacques Garcia to give the NoMad interiors a whiff of the grand dame. During its soft opening this spring, we took a whirl around the hotel, which pairs traditional, swank, and very French interior design moves with a decidedly modern, zeitgeist-y, and still very New York feel.
Joseph Joseph Prevails in Patent Lawsuit
From the glossy and the tactile to the litigous, Dwell's June issue (on newsstands now) covers every facet of interior design, including a piece that addresses the touchy subject of knockoffs and authentic design. Continuing what we started with "The Real Cost of Rip-Offs," today we talk to Richard Joseph, who, along with his twin brother and co-founder Anthony, have been fighting Chinese counterfeiters on behalf of their company Joseph Joseph. In and out of court for the past two years, team Joseph won a hard-fought lawsuit this April that will stop (for the time being) the reproduction of their original design for the Index™ Cutting Board.*
ICFF 2012: Offsite Design Exhibitions
Each spring, New York Design Week gets bigger and better thanks in part to an ever-expanding roster at ICFF (more on that here) as well as the dedication of several local organizations presenting contemporary design outside the walls of Javits Center. Here are a few notes and photos from Wanted Design, the NoHo Design District, and various showrooms we visited in the span of five action-packed days. Our roving team of editors Instagrammed the daylights out of ICFF, as well as the offsite events, exhibitions, and parties we attended en masse. ICFF 2012: Picks from Javits Center
This week we're digging deep into our favorites objets de design spotted at the 2012 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, from satellite events to the show floor at Javits Center. (See here for full coverage.) After a weekend spent trolling the aisles, I've picked a few favorites from designers young, old, beloved, and novel. Incidentally, I saw more than a few rugs I liked, which dovetails nicely with Dwell's June interiors issue, hitting newsstands on May 29.

Facade Focus: Wood
A Boston couple with a big extended family wanted to enlarge their brick neo-Georgian with an addition that would fit a generous kitchen and hangout space, all while avoiding superfluous detail. Or, as architecture firm NADAAA interpreted the brief, they wanted a “clean space where they can evacuate themselves from their stuff.”
Public Art at Johns Hopkins
Yesterday the Johns Hopkins Hospital officially opened its new building, the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center, bringing an empathetic and curatorial eye to civic architecture by inviting 70 artists to create more than 500 on-site installations throughout the structure. One of the most visible highlights is a 250,000 square foot glass curtain wall on the facade designed by artist Spencer Finch, in which each aluminum panel is sandwiched between two layers of glass colored in a "carefully distilled palette" of 26 shades, one for each letter of the alphabet.
