Patenting Apartment Piles

A patent on a house design: this is the heart of the controversy surrounding Hans Zwimpfer's Pile-Up Housing. The Swiss architect claims to have invented a new solution to sprawl by stacking single-family homes; an idea that–a skeptic could say–might be a little familiar in the post-Louis Sullivan world. Nevertheless the idea earned the gentleman US Patent 7,237,361.

Airstream Books

There's a magical nook on Williamsburg's Metropolitan Ave. sidewalk where the Graham St. L Train vent allows the underground train's announcements to waft up through the grates to the hardware store and sidewalk bookstore above. It's called Airstream Midcentury Furniture and Books, and, as the name suggests, there aren't just books anymore: modern pieces of furniture sit on those very grates.

Kahn's Park Gets the Greenlight

The New York City parks around the Brooklyn Bridge are about to gain an upstream sibling. Roosevelt Island has just received a conditional green light for a new bit of green bling: the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, a plaza designed by Louis I. Kahn in 1972 for the site south of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital Ruin. The 2.8-acre park program will have closely-spaced granite columns to be carved, ultimately, with Roosevelt's Four Freedoms (freedom of speech; freedom of religion; freedom from want; freedom from fear).

Greenpoint's New Gem

There's something fascinating that happens when creative types are placed in a new geographical context.  A screenwriter might start developing place-dependent characters; a painter might start sketching. But if you're a former Director of Visual at Ferragamo and Gucci, you do something like buy and sell. We're talking about John Krenek, who after having spent a good deal of time in the Catskills and other eye-pleasing international destinations, has developed quite the curatorial aesthetic. Enter West and Green: his new store opening at 190 West Street in Greenpoint. It's the most compelling new secret in New York City interiors.

Gehry's Grand Performance

Like cloud formations, Frank Gehry's buildings of the past years makes one imagine forms: perhaps a ship's bow, a ray of light, a Hershey's Kiss, an armadillo eating a Hershey's Kiss. But something unlikely is happening to Gehry's Fisher Center in Annandale-on-Hudson the next two weekends. Dancers will use the exterior of this building as a stage in "Rapture", a site-specific dance performance choreographed by Noemie LaFrance.

Floating Pool

There was once a steel-decked river barge, decommissioned and idle in Morgan City, Louisiana. Lonely and unused, it was purchased by the Neptune Foundation, a not-for-profit that constructs movable waterfront pools for recreationally underserved communities. The foundation commissioned Jonathan Kirschenfeld Associates to have at it; and one Hurricane Katrina and about two years of work later, the Floating Pool was sent north to New York. This summer, it's been moored at Hunt's Point, Brooklyn. Next month it will depart New York. Destination: the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
