We're quite excited for our first-ever San Diego Home Tours, which takes place next weekend, November 10–11. We've got a slew of great modern homes all over San Diego and its environs for you to explore, as well as a Meet the Architects party to kick things off the evening of November 9. And in anticipation, Dwell deputy editor Aaron Britt will give a preview of the event, his take on West Coast design, and a few architectural highlights of the SoCal metropolis live Saturday morning, November 3, on the radio show My Home Improvement.
We asked whom, past or present, you would invite to your dream dinner party and how it would be styled. We received a host of touching, funny, and unique responses. From intimate family affairs to decadent celebrity soirees with guests of honor like Ludwig van Beethoven and Steve Jobs, all entries detailed parties we would love to attend. Although each event would be a ball, one entry touched our hearts the most. We are thrilled to announce that the lucky winner of a Marimekko place setting for 12 and fully planned Dwell dinner party is Tanuja Sheth. Read her winning words below:
Now that the experts have had their say, we are pleased to announce the grand prize winner of the Material Change Textile Competition. Without further ado, the design that will be put into production by Lulan Artisans is SYMPA 3, designed by Evan Polenghi! Our most heartfelt congratulations to Evan. Your stunning design won over the modern hearts of all! We wish you the very best with your Lulan debut. And, of course, a special thank you goes out to all who participated. Stay tuned to Dwell.com for more great contests in the future.
Over 900 readers answered our call to share why they love design in our Love What You Do contest, presented in partnership with Dyson. We posted the entries for popular vote—on the line was a $5,000 grant for the winner—and received over 10,000 votes. Hanni Liliedahl Silacci of Monterey, California, stood out with her “Version of Existence” entry and was crowned the grand prize winner. Her words left no question to both readers and the Dwell staff of exactly why she is passionate about design.
We were blown away by the caliber of the 120 textile designs received in the Material Change design competition. Partnering with Lulan, we challenged readers to submit an original modern textile design idea using traditional weaving techniques and construction methods as inspiration. Below are the seven finalists. Check back in on October 9 to find out whose design will be put into production by Lulan.
