A Modern Mortuary in Munich
In the tenth-century district of Riem, on the far eastern edge of the city of Munich, sits the Mortuary at Munich–Riem (Friedhof-Riem). Designed by architects Andreas Meck and Stephan Koppel, the complex is comprised of unassuming buildings that conjure a decidedly modern last resting place.
Concorso d'Eleganza 2010
On the banks of Lake Como, in the Lombardy region of Italy, rests the location of one of the most prestigious automobile events in the world, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Beginning in 1929, this showcase has existed for the industry's leading manufacturers to display cutting-edge design and engineering.This parade of classic vehicles, juxtaposed against concept cars of the future, is a fine example of tradition meeting innovation, as is the architectural backdrop: the stunning Villa Erba, built in 1898 and the onetime family home of legendary Italian director Luchino Visconti, is set against the dramatic Spazio Villa Erba, designed by architect Mario Bellini in 1990.
Touring the BMW Headquarters
Dwell traveled to Munich, Germany, to get an up close and personal look at BMW Welt, an undulating, stainless-steel-clad structure designed by Wolf Prix of Coop Himmelb(l)au. It is joined on BMW's campus by a towering "four-cylinder" building and the BMW Museum, its circular antithesis, each created by Karl Schwanzer in the early 1970s. While there we were treated to a sneak peek at BMW's soon-to-be-unveiled sub-brand, BMW i, the company's first foray into the realm of electric vehicles.
