A polar vortex is a lot more tolerable when you have beautiful, breezy pictures of sun-drenched outdoor spaces to stare at and day dream. Here are some of our current favorite places we'd like to laze away the day in.

AN UNCONVENTIONAL PREFAB ON FISHERS ISLAND

A family’s remote island retreat becomes a more permanent home base, thanks to the efficiency of building modular. Here, one of the family’s favorite spots: a hammock on the second green roof of the house. Photo by Matthew Williams.

ANGULAR MODERN BEACH HOUSE IN FLORIDA

Architect Jody Beck with her son Jonah Tisdale, 1, in front of the family beach house she designed on Anna Maria Island, Florida. The home is essentially a bunker on the beach: its structure and envelope are constructed entirely of poured-in-place concrete to resist hurricane force winds while enabling dramatic cantilevers and unobstructed views of the Gulf of Mexico. Photo courtesy of Traction Architecture.

Exterior concrete staircases cantilever over the pool and provide circulation between interior and exterior living spaces. Perforated metal railings provide a protective enclosure while creating patterns of light that mark the movement of the sun. The recycled plastic chairs are by Loll. Photo courtesy of Traction Architecture.

SALVAGED WOOD RENOVATION IN PORTLAND

Fusion Landscape Design worked with PATH to remake this backyard into a grown-up playground. Under the stairwell sits a tiny custom cedar sauna and an outdoor shower—just a literal hop, skip, and jump away from the sprawling in-ground eight-by-ten-foot hot tub. Down three short stairs, Gloster’s Elan dining table from Design Within Reach is surrounded by Spark chairs by Don Chadwick for Knoll and a built-in fire pit and DCS grill by Fisher & Paykel—all resting on a smooth surface of bluestone pavers. Photo by Lincoln Barbour.

AN ECONOMICAL MODULAR PREFAB IN OREGON

An easy-to-build modular system is the perfect solution for a family in Bend, Oregon. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson’s design for the Verheyden clan is instantly legible from the back deck, where the repetition of trusses, windows, and lumber creates a strong linear profile.

A MODULAR BEACHSIDE GETAWAY IN AUSTRALIA

Putting her architectural training to work, a resident of Merricks, Australia, helps design a modular beachside getaway for her family. “The patio was always part of the original design, as we knew we would be living inside and outside during the warmer months,” says Horne. “Keeping it covered also helps keep it dry and provides a feeling of containment.” The wicker swing chairs are from eBay, and the fabrics are from Ikea. Photo by Lisa Cohen.
