Pros: Danish designer Verner Panton conceived Panthella in 1971 and it’s still chic as ever: a little mod and a little Saarinen. A soft, luminous glow emanates from the hemispherical shade, which appears to hover over a slim tapered stem. Cons: $628 feels like a lot to spend on a lamp that’s entirely plastic (even if it is made of extra-strong ABS). Considering the price, we’d like to see more features, like a dimmer or three-way switch. $628.00
Break out the bubbly, it’s time for a toast. Here’s to the golden anniversary of Louis Poulsen’s colorful classic PH5—recently reissued as PH50—and cheers to a very bright future indeed.
Constructed of aluminum and white-opal glass, this hanging light is the result of a collaboration between architect Norman Foster and Louis Poulsen. $3,200
Maestro-of-lighting Poul Henningsen designed the PH Snowball in 1924, and its glare-free radiance is just as clear today. The aluminum shades are placed at just the right angles to ensure even illumination. $2,244.00
