Independent Bookstores Across America
We're culling together a map of independent booksellers around the United States, highlighting the kinds of places where you might roam for hours, scouring the shelves and scouting the stacks. If you're thrilled by the prospect of discovering obscure out-of-prints, rare editions and favorite second-hand paperbacks, or you're just a book-lover that likes the idea of buying tomes locally, we hope you'll help us create the biggest, most bibliographic map of independent bookstores in the United States. hello hello books
hello hello has deep and fabled roots: it began in 1992 as Second Read (later renamed Rock City Books), a business that was integral to Rockland's renaissance. As Second Read, it provided a source for high-quality used books; as Rock City, it also began developing a reputation for a careful selection of new books; as hello hello it will expand into an equal measure of used, new and bargain books, and add a selection of magazines, art & craft, gifts and select vintage items.

Gulliver's Books
Gulliver's Books opened in Fairbanks in 1985 when a friend suggested the town could use a good bookstore. Gulliver's has grown and prospered since then.
They started as just a used book store, but within a few years began to sell new books too. They opened the Second Story Cafe in 1997 with the idea that good coffee and fresh food would be the perfect complement to great books.

The Lyrical Ballad Bookstore
The Lyrical Ballad Bookstore is a used and new books of all sorts here. Its a little messy, but well organized. Lyrical Ballad is composed of secret twisiting hallways, which is very cool. The owners are so nice and helpful and often bring their friendly old dog into the shop. The door jams so to avoid looking awkward while opening it, i always knock for someone to let it in.
You can also call ahead to secure an item or check availability.

Browser's Book Shop
In the 80s and 90s, while I was a teenager and young college student in Olympia, I found three books here that remain important to me, during some of my many visits to Browser's Book Shop. One was a book of photographs of Paris in the 20s and 30s, by Brassai. Another was a small, used paperback of short stories by Harlan Ellison. The third was an anthropolody book by Liza Dalby about geisha in Japan, where she goes and lives with them, and during one memorable evening becomes one of them. I'm so glad this bookstore remains in business. I go visit when I go back to Olympia.

Red Emma's
Every neighborhood needs an anarchist bookstore like Red Emma's; good for lattes, hummus or guacamole on your bagel, and an eclectic selection of books and magazines you won't find just anywhere. Plus free wifi and a sign by the cash register asking that "if you must rant, rant quietly". But don't expect fast service - its more the kind of browse around, loaf a bit and take it slow kinda joint.

WORD
WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that celebrated its fourth anniversary in March 2011. Their primary goal is to be whatever their community needs them to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, they're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). They're a small operation, just 1000 square feet, but they read too much, so it all works out.

Vroman's Bookstore
Vroman’s Bookstore was founded on November 14, 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman, located at 60 E Colorado Street, a few blocks west of its current location. Born in 1856 in La Salle, Illinois, Vroman moved to Pasadena, California in the late 1800s to improve his wife's health. When she died two years later, he sold his book collection to raise the capital to open the bookstore. The store also sold photographic supplies. Vroman was a passionate photographer, specializing in scenes of the American West and portraits of Native Americans. Ansel Adams called Vroman an influence on his own work and Vroman’s work hangs in both the Huntington and the Southwest Museum. Once the store became profitable, Vroman returned to book collecting, donating his massive collection to Pasadena Public Library when he passed away.

Talking Leaves
Talking Leaves Books has been providing the reading public of Buffalo and Western New York with a distinctive and unusual selection of the finest writing and thinking bound into books for almost 30 years now. The name of our store derives from a recurrent conceptualization of books by peoples who were unfamiliar with print; bookpages were seen as "leaves" that "talked," imparting wisdom and knowledge and spirit (not "data") in order to represent, expand and preserve them. Books were seen as an intriguing way of keeping track of the treasures of the people: their minds and their ways of being in, and understanding, the world.

Moe's Books
Since its inception back in the heyday of the Beatnik era, Moe's Books has managed to become more than just a great bookstore--it has achieved the rarified status of a beloved landmark institution as well. Situated just four blocks from the University of California campus, Moe's has managed to mirror the often turbulent and triumphant times that have come to epitomize all that is exciting and unique about Berkeley.
Founded in 1959 by Moe Moskowitz and his wife Barbara, the original site of the store was a small shop on Shattuck just north of University Avenue. He moved the store up to Telegraph Avenue in the 1960's, right in the middle of the Free Speech Movement and the famous anti-war demonstrations that put Berkeley on the political map.

P.S. Bookshop
A used bookstore, by definition, is conservative. It can mock right wing public figures, boast a unique selection of books on avant-garde art, punk music and recreational drugs, highlight anarchist and revolutionary writers in its Poli-Sci section – a conservative establishment it remains. It isn't just the act of preserving old books; it is a set of moral and ideological values that are embedded in these objects' very being, regardless of their overt content. These values can be either of historical import or simply anachronistic. They can shed interesting light on our present human condition, or be tossed aside as outmoded and irrelevant. Either way, a used bookstore's very charm is its leaning toward the past. click to visit P.S. Bookstore, in Dumbo, NY.

Changing Hands opened on April Fool's Day, 1974 with a big interest in books and community service, and an eye toward books not readily available elsewhere. Some of those friends became employees at the store which was originally set up as a worker-owned business where decisions were made by consensus. Currently they support local public radio stations, schools, teachers, and charities and no part of the price paid for a book goes to a remote corporate headquarters where decisions are made solely on maximizing profits.

Bart's Books
Bart’s Books, in Ojai, CA, is the home to the largest independently owned and operated outdoor bookstore in the U.S.A. In 1964 Bart’s Books was little more than a sparkle in the eye of Richard Bartinsdale whose collection of books had gotten so overwhelming that he constructed a series of book cases along the sidewalk so that passersby could peruse the titles. In lieu of a cash register, “Bart” left coffee cans atop the book cases. People would select a title or two and leave payment in the cans, giving birth to Bart’s world famous tradition of selling books via the honor system. Since that time Bart’s Books has become host to nearly one million books ranging from the thirty-five cent specials which line the outside walls and are still for sale on the honor system, to rare, out of print first editions, and art books valued in the thousands of dollars.

A couple of Fridays back I walked into a bookstore on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. I’d been listening to a song called Cheer Up, repeatedly, and I was listening to it again as I browsed the shelves and took in the vibe. There was a message in the song which I needed to hear again and again. Here is the message We’ve been down in captivity [captivity] so long, so long If we unite then we will be free [we will be free] so strong, so strong, come I want you to There were two people in the shop besides me. One of them had a key hanging by his waist. Listening to the song, I had an idea and I didn’t hesitate in sharing it - Do you work here? I asked the man with the key as I pulled off my earphones and he nodded. - Do you ever meet up with the other independent bookstores in Vancouver, to talk about experimenting, trying new things, sharing what works, figuring out how you’re going to deal with the iPad and Kindle and eBooks??? - No, he replied. We don’t have time to do that. We’re so busy with the day to day running of our bookstores. And I guess he didn’t have the time to ask me what ideas I might have either (check my website if you’re curious). I’m a zoomer I said as I gave the man my card, just in case the realisation/inspiration hits him sometime soon. Then I put on my earphones again and played Cheer Up once more from the start. I'm on the lookout for answers that work. There must be so much positive feedback out there - is this being collected, distributed, shared? Because we're all after answers that work, aren't we?
By the way, Joseph Beth has been bought out by one of the huge chains, and is no long independently owned.
