New at the Dwell Store, Eastvold's furniture collection blends traditional woodworking techniques and modern elegance.

Rebuilding Schools Through Art and Community

There's no denying: high school architecture is often less than inspired. With the help of New Haven-based architecture firm Svigals + Partners, students of the city's Lincoln-Bassett School gave their hallways a burst of color (and inspiration to boot) by covering them with murals before going back to school for the fall. This type of project is no stretch for the firm, which is currently at work designing Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Its design for the school incorporates both students' suggestions and artistic creations. We're thrilled to welcome Barry Svigals, managing partner of the firm, to join us at Dwell on Design New York from October 9-11, 2014 to discuss community rebuilding.

Prefab Passive House on San Juan Islands

When two retired teachers decided to build a new home, they knew they wanted an energy-efficient, no-stress Passive House design that would support aging in place. The resulting 1,800-square-foot house is the first Certified Passive House on the San Juan Islands in Washington, and it’s only the fourth in the state. The home, designed by Olympia-based firm The Artisans Group, has a circular floor plan that centers around a prefabricated pod that contains the kitchen and two bathrooms. In order to achieve its Passive status, the residence features an air-sealed exterior shell that provides insulation, efficient windows and doors, and a heat recovery ventilator to keep it warm in the winter. In the summer, careful window placement and shades ensure the space won't overheat.

Smart Toothbrush Tracks Your Brushing Habits

For the people who use them regularly, fitness trackers give feedback that can be the difference between staying on the couch and getting up and going for a walk. It seems logical that the same motivation-through-metrics idea might eventually make its way to toothbrushing. When synched with the free Oral B app on an iOS or Android device, the Oral-B SmartSeries brushes connect via Bluetooth and give x-y graphs showing your brushing habits. Two models will be available: $219 for the Oral-B SmartSeries 7000 and $159 for the Oral-B SmartSeries 5000.

Bright Renovation of a 1970s Home

Finding undeveloped land in the idyllic Californian city of Carmel-by-the-Sea is next to impossible. So when Austrian architect Mary Ann Schicketanz decided to leave rural Big Sur, where she had lived for 21 years, and move to town, she looked for a good lot with a house she could tear down. But when she found a two-bedroom built in 1972, she instead embarked on a massive renovation of the structure. The end result? A LEED Gold-certified urban hideaway that bows to its modernist history, while giving off a distinctly contemporary feeling.
