Who We Are

Lara Hedberg Deam is the founder of Dwell Magazine. The Dwell mission was inspired by Deam’s own experience building her home and her recognition that there was a need for more resources that encouraged the expression of individuals' ideas architecturally. After going back to school to study design, Lara's interest in promoting innovative modern design and architecture in the U.S. became the founding principle for Dwell magazine, which launched in October 2000. Prior to Dwell, Deam was involved in a direct mail family business and active in various non-profits. Favorite sites: www.mossonline.com, www.yoox.com, and www.gawker.com.

Michela O'Connor Abrams is publisher and president of Dwell. Previously, she was president of Imagine Media's Business Division, including the flagship publication Business 2.0. She has also served as president and CEO of Computerworld, COO of Ziff Davis Events and publisher and group vice president at McGraw-Hill. She sits on the board of directors for Clickability and Playback Media.

Sam Grawe is the editor in chief at Dwell. He started at the magazine in October 2000, as the editorial assistant and currently holds the record for most title changes on the creative team. Sam is also a contributing photographer for the magazine. Prior to Dwell, Sam worked for The Burdick Group where he researched and wrote the museography for Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Museum. He has also written for Wired and Nylon magazines, co-taught a design workshop with Erwan Bouroullec at The University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and is one half of the electronic music group Windsurf (Sentrall Records). Favorite sites: www.archinect.com, www.archpaper.com, and www.unicahome.com.

Michael Cannell is Dwell's New York editor and editorial director of dwell.com. For more than six years, he was editor of the House & Home section of The New York Times. He was a senior editor at Architecture magazine, and has written for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek, Metropolis, and Sports Illustrated. His biography of I.M. Pei was published by Crown in 1995. Michael is a graduate of Princeton and the Columbia University School of Journalism.

Amber Bravo
is a senior editor at Dwell. After graduating from Amherst College in Amherst, MA, with a BA in English and Fine Arts, she moved out West mainly to be contrary, but soon found she rather liked the temperate climate. She worked as an editorial assistant at Zoetrope: All-Story before coming to Dwell as an editorial assistant. She often wonders how it is people wrote before www.wikipedia.org; she was overjoyed to find that she could access the OED via www.sfpl.lib.ca.us; she fantasizes about buying things from www.lagarconne.com; and she enjoys her daily schadenfreude at www.gofugyourself.com. She’s also convinced that her coworkers have edited their web pics to reveal their best selves, and frankly, so has she.

Geoff Manaugh
is a senior editor at Dwell. He is also the author of BLDGBLOG, a Yahoo! Top 25 Pick of the Year (2006) and a Time Magazine Style & Design 100 blog (2007). In 2009, Chronicle Books will publish a full-length book based upon the site. Geoff also serves as an editor at Archinect, and he is a freelance writer, having published work in Domus, Metropolis, The Next American City, Mark Magazine, Blend, 032c, and so on. Favorite sites: Pruned, New Scientist, Brand Avenue, City of Sound and Ballardian.

Aaron Britt is an editor at Dwell. He recently gave up the paltry pay but considerable lexicographical glory of his former job in Washington DC, as a reporter and researcher for William Safire's column, "On Language," in the New York Times Magazine, for the queasy-making lifestyle of a freelance writer in San Francisco. Thankfully Dwell swooped in, saving him from a life of penury that could only have ended in debtor's prison. He has written for the New York Times Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, Animal Planet, and the History Channel.

Sonja Hall
is an editorial assistant to Sam Grawe, editor-in-chief. (Previously, she was the executive assistant to Michela O’Connor Abrams). Throughout her formative years, she rode quirky horses, loved making lists, drawing, and memorizing the geographic location of all the countries in the Western Hemisphere. Eventually, she majored in Spanish/Chicano Studies from the University of Minnesota (and lived in Costa Rica). Though International Law was her post-graduation plan, her desire to be in a creative work environment became vital to her psych, so she packed up her things on a whim and moved to San Francisco. Although she’s over 2,000 miles from her identical twin sister and family in Minnesota, her love for a Mission burrito, running the urban hills, and the spontaneous energy of the city challenges this Midwestern lass daily.

Kate Stone
is the photo director of Dwell. She was born and raised in the Arkansas Ozarks though her career began amongst the crystalline lakes of Minneapolis. While there she served as a studio manager for a large commercial photo studio and also freelanced as a photo producer, film production coordinator, and wardrobe/prop stylist. In 2000 she moved to San Francisco and began working as an art buyer for advertising mammoth Publicis and Hal Riney. After leaving Publicis, she freelanced as an art buyer/photo producer for clients such as Apple Computer, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, and Anderson DDB. Kate’s varied background gives her a unique and holistic understanding of photography that aids her on her daily quest for that perfect picture.

Amy Silberman is the photo editor at Dwell.  Born on the East Coast, she was eventually called to the sun & fog of California, after a brief stint in Texas (which was maybe too sunny). Trying to figure out what to do with her education in photography, she took her uncanny talents as a troubleshooter and problem-solver, and turned to photo production. She spent six years as a freelancer, mixing her ability to track down hard to find things (rare cars, tin can houses, diabetic 60-year-old surfers) with her innate knack for organization.  She spent three years as the senior photo producer for DWR, where she greatly expanded her knowledge of modern design and furniture moving.  She is pleased to now be professionally looking at photographs and assigning shoots in lieu of the more arduous task of wrangling photo shoots.  Favorite sites: www.banksy.co.uk, www.designobserver.com, and www.bbc.co.uk/radio.

Alexis Tjian is the assistant photo editor at Dwell. After graduating from college with a degree in Marine Biology, Alexis realized that she wanted to pursue her passion in photography. While everyone suggested that the natural progression for her was to shoot manatees and dolphins for National Geographic, she decided to attend art school at California College of the Arts instead. While finishing school, Alexis juggled cocktails as a server and prints as the photo intern at Dwell. Now she crosses the Bay each day on her commute to Dwell, happy to be above water. Favorite sites: www.bhphotovideo.com, www.notcot.com, and  www.capriciousmagazine.com.

Fran Fox
is the senior director of production/manufacturing at Dwell. Previously, she was vice president of manufacturing at Red Herring Magazine. Fran also served as director of manufacturing at GamePro Media, where she was responsible for the production and distribution of three publications and a book division. Originally from New York City, she started in the magazine industry at Avenue Magazine, and now has over 20 years of experience in publishing and production, Fran was inducted into the Production Executives Hall of Fame in 2001.

Bill Lyons is Dwell's production supervisor and has been in the print production field for many years. His experience has seen him through varied aspects of digital print production, including typesetting, mechanical and digital pre-press, retail catalogs, newspaper, magazine and collateral ad production. Before Dwell, Bill was a freelancer and a digital pre-press operator at The Industry Standard.
