It’s never too late to start collecting modern furniture. Take inspiration from these well-furnished interiors, which bring design classics out of the museum and into home.
Interior designer Lynda Charfoos, who is based in Bloomfield Hills and sits on the board of governors of Cranbrook, furnished the space with pieces by school alumni like Frances Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Charles Ea

It’s only fitting to start our design collection tour with an Eero Saarinen-designed house on Cranbrook’s campus. After 15 years of disuse, the school's former director, Reed Kroloff, and interior designer Lynda Charfoos renovated the home and furnished it with pieces by school alumni like Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, Ralph Rapson, and Niels Diffrient.

A design-minded duo bought and restored a 538-square-foot Deckhouse in Hampshire, England, filling the compact space with pieces from a bevy of design icons. In the living room, Arne Jacobsen Swan chairs flank a Marcel Breuer for Isokon nesting table and a Florence Knoll credenza rests against the wall. The adjacent deck holds Breuer’s Folding Armchair and a table from Aram in London.

Krzentowski claims a rare pair of 1952 Paulin chairs for Muebles T.V. are the origin for the design of his famous Ribbon chair. Ron Arad’s Rolling Volume makes for dubious seating.

The Paris flat of gallery director Didier Krzentowski is jam-packed with whimsical design pieces. The living room features furniture by Pierre Paulin for Artifort, including a pair of brown leather chairs, a purple 261 sofa, and a seating range in yellow upholstery. A small family of Verner Panton 1969 Wire lamps sits next to Ron Arad’s Rolling Volume, which faces a bright pink Smarties table by Mattia Bonetti.

Architectural designer Curtis Popp bought and renovated a 2,900-square-foot house in Sacramento and supplemented his existing furniture collection with affordable new pieces to fill the space. A Barcelona table by Mies van der Rohe occupies the middle of the living room. It is surrounded by a bright red Panton chair, a molded plywood DCW chair by Charles and Ray Eames, and a pair of Marcel Breuer’s leather-and-chrome Wassily chairs. An Ikea loveseat completes the ensemble. In the far back, a Saarinen Tulip table is accompanied by a series of Philippe Starck La Marie chairs.

In a Brussels mansion, two design experts partner with European galleries to present rare furniture, objects, and art in their home. They live with the items they borrow, and welcome collectors and visitors into their home to experience (and purchase) design icons in situ. In this iteration, the drawing room contains two Tonico lounge chairs by Sergio Rodrigues, a jacaranda bench by Alberto Reis, and a leather-and-rosewood sling chair fabricated by Liceu de Artes e Oficios de São Paulo.

When decorating their newly renovated mid-century home in Los Angeles, a design-savvy couple thoughtfully arranged the furniture they’d amassed over the years. The living room is furnished with a Jasper sofa by Room & Board, Laccio tables by Marcel Breuer, and an Eero Saarinen side table. In the background, George Nelson’s Saucer pendant lamp illuminates a Segmented Base table and molded plastic side chairs by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller.

A relatively untouched Eichler in San Rafael, California, was the perfect home for a pair of collectors to fill with their mid-century pieces. After walking through the front door visitors enter directly into the enormous kitchen and living space. The interior is minimal, using predominantly timber and concrete. It also provides some spectacular views of the river.

A couple with a passion for contemporary furniture filled their prefab home outside Zurich with a range of playful pieces. The living room features a Transform sofa by Moroso, two Grand Confort armchairs by Le Corbusier, a Marcel Breuer Laccio coffee table, and a Pastil chair by Eero Aarnio.
