Dwell Home Venice: Part 6

In this series, Sebastian Mariscal designs a home in Venice, California, that brings the outside in. We track the project from start to finish with future resident Michael Sylvester. Part 6, September 2011: Preparing the Footings.

Our house will have concrete slab floors and these are produced in a two step process that involves pouring the trench footings and then pouring the finished slabs. In the slideshow that follws, we take a look at the process.

  Footing trenches are dug along the lines that were previously marked on the soil. The colored string is tied off on posts that have been precisely placed using survey data.  The orange flags mark tree roots that cut across the footings. Major roots were carefully preserved during the trench digging. However, a few roots were accidentally cut and fighting to protect the trees is an ongoing battle.

  Wooden formwork is in place in preparation for the first concrete pour. Steel rebar (short for reinforcing bar) is in the trenches. The steel pieces with the orange safety caps will be bent down into a horizontal position after the concrete is poured in the trenches and has cured.
