The outlines of footings are marked on the ground. This is the first 1:1 scale layout of the home, which makes for an interesting walk around the site -
Footing trenches are dug along the lines that were previously marked on the soil. The colored string is tied off on posts that have been precisely placed using survey data. The orange flags mark tree roots that cut across the footings. Major roots were carefully preserved during the trench digging. However, a few roots were accidentally cut and fighting to protect the trees is an ongoing battle. -
Wooden formwork is in place in preparation for the first concrete pour. Steel rebar (short for reinforcing bar) is in the trenches. The steel pieces with the orange safety caps will be bent down into a horizontal position after the concrete is poured in the trenches and has cured. -
Rebar is placed in the trenches in locations as specified by our structural engineer. A tree root is shown wrapped in packed mud and wet burlap cloth. -
One of the steel columns that will stand at the end of the large lift and slide door system off the living room. The base of the column has been set in concrete. The rebar and wooden forms are in position ready for the footing pour. -
