In this series, Sebastian Mariscal designs a home in Venice, California, that brings the outside in. We track the project from start to finish with future resident Michael Sylvester. Part 23, May 2013: Landscaping.

With a home that fully integrates the indoor and outdoor spaces, landscape design is a critical element. Sebastian Mariscal had defined a series of outdoor rooms and we selected Ventura, CA based Landscape Architect Jack Kiesel to help us make the most of these spaces. In the design phase of our landscaping we discussed modes of use and paths of travel for the numerous outdoor spaces that are tightly integrated with the home. Jack Kiesel drew up several rounds of plans as we agreed on ground cover material and refined the plant selections and layout. My wife and I had clear views on what types of plants we liked and these were integrated into the design discussions.

On delivery day a truck load of various plants arrive. In this image a small selection from the delivery is staged in a front courtyard. Plants here include a Ginkgo Biloba tree, Bush Tango Kangaroo Paws and Small Cape Rush.

Landscape Architect Jack Kiesel lays out the plants in the main courtyard. The spacing between the plants must take into account their mature sizes as well as any desired layering effects. Sparsely spaced planting can look quite full after a year or so – patience is required.

Placing the Purple Hopseed Bushes along the front lot line and entry gate. The broken sidewalk will be replaced once all other landscaping is completed.

With plants in the ground the irrigation system is installed. The landscaping contractor for this project was Jacinto Sanchez and team from Stout Landscape Design Build.

After all planting and irrigation was completed a cover of 3/4" Del Rio washed gravel was installed over soil areas.
