At Home in the Modern World

Solune Thompson

This house started as a tiny rundown bungalow in Atwater Village, Los Angeles. Now it's a remarkable home that represents an apex of green design and modern aesthetic.  Rebecca, an architect, and Colin, a builder, worked together to create an addition to the original house, and added a separate office in the back. They did everything themselves.

The house itself is beautiful in a 3-D way.  Rebecca and Colin, along with their kids Rei and Marni, represent a happy family unit, and the living space reflects the harmony.  The flow from outside space into the interior is seamless.  The kitchen is the heart of the house.  The bright colors provide a fun backdrop to the white cabinets and stove, and seem to always inspire lively conversation (especially after a coffee or two).

The yard includes a Koi pond, a deck, a playhouse, a work shed, an office, and a garden, all within a small footprint, but it never seems crowded.  Colin composes the outdoor space in a way that feels natural and unforced, mixing the exotic and common to create a lush and inviting atmosphere.

This is a house I love and I hope you do too.
