GABLE-ROOFED RURAL WEEKEND HOME IN CONNECTICUT To create their rural Connecticut getaway, Lisa Gray and Alan Organschi layered their modern design sensibility atop an early 20th-century stone foundation. Maybe the most enviable bunk in the house, the downstairs guest room has an unadulterated view out into the trees. Photo by Andrea Chu. Photo by Andrea Chu.

PARTY-FRIENDLY APARTMENT IN TORONTO A Vespa-riding dentist and curator, Dr. Kenneth Montague is one of a kind—and his home is equally unique. The Murphy bed in the guest bedroom sits behind Montague’s desk, allowing the compact room to function comfortably for working and sleeping at different times. It’s made with customized millwork, Häfele bed hardware, and an Ikea mattress. When it’s open, it reveals hidden shelving. Photo by Naomi Finlay. Photo by Naomi Finlay. PARTY-FRIENDLY APARTMENT IN TORONTO In the guest bathroom, a mirror, soap dish, hand towels, and a tray hang from a modular floor-mounted Autopole shelf system by Alu. The hardware adds an industrial note to the look of the room and takes up less area than a cabinet. Photo by Naomi Finlay. Photo by Naomi Finlay. Courtesy of © 2012 Naomi Finlay.

LIVING IN A BELGIAN WATER TOWER A renovation transforms a concrete water tower into a six-story living space that rises high above the surrounding scenery. The third floor consists of a guest bedroom and an office. The use of vertically and horizontally oriented wenge wood—a durable, heavy, and hard material—helps to separate the guest bedroom from its bathroom. The tub is by Rapsel.

LIGHT-FILLED FAMILY HOME RENOVATION IN COPENHAGEN In a former fishermen’s cottage outside Copenhagen, a young family has carved out a cozy, light-filled home. When Bjerre-Poulsen first saw the house, “I instantly saw all the interesting possibilities,” he says. “As an architect you see not what it is but what it could be.” Among those possibilities: transforming an adjacent storehouse into a guest room, connected to the original house via the renovated dining room and sitting area. PAINT IT BLACK This family of cost-conscious Hamburgers (freshly back in Germany after years abroad) converted a kitschy turn-of-the-century villa into a high-design home. Now that the interior’s palette is firmly in place, Winterhalder has slowly been adding splashes of color. E27 pendant lamps from Muuto in the kitchen and guest room have red cords; one wall in the guest room is also red, with matching red locker storage. Photo by Mark Seelen. Photo by Mark Seelen.

BARNS ENNOBLED Subverting the traditional, conservatively cozy British barn conversion, Carl Turner created a getaway in rural Norfolk for himself and his friends to visit, repose, and consider the beauty of agrarian minimalism. Carl Turner and Mary Martin pose on the porch of the Stealth Barn, a multipurpose structure that plays as a guest cottage, office space, and escape from whatever may be cooking at Ochre Barn.
