The Graham & Co. Lodge Hotel in the Catskills

There’s a boutique hotel tucked away in Phoenicia, New York that sells bold t-shirts starkly demanding Catskills vs. the Hamptons as if to imply “Choose a side.” Besides the tri-state’s penchant for competitiveness on nearly everything, one thing’s for certain: There’s a new weekend destination on the map—and Graham & Co. is the summer’s hippest way to enjoy the West Hudson.

Last year, four Brooklyn-based friends—among them OAK founder Jeff Madalena and Athletics Creative Director Jason Gnewikow—noticed their local roadside motel had been recently vacated and, they thought, could benefit from their collective design prowess. They snapped it up and redesigned it from the ground up. Custom-built beds of reclaimed wood, vintage fixtures, house-branded bath amenities, and a free Budweiser at check-in; everything at Graham & Co. has been well considered and expertly executed. Consider our side chosen.

Graham & Co. is located at 80 Route 214 Phoenicia, New York.

Every last detail—especially graphic-related—is well done and finished. Not surprising when one of the partners is Creative Director of Athletics design firm.

Each of the 20 guest rooms are comfortable, but intentionally minimal. The idea is to encourage guests to utilize the motel’s ample communal spaces, especially during the summer.

Most rooms come with a vintage kitchenette—a good thing considering Phoenica’s scarce amount of local restaurants (“Solitude” is listed as an amenity on the motel’s website, after all).

The pool’s water comes from a nearby spring. The intertubes are useful for lazy river-ing along the Esopus creek (a favorite pastime of guests and hoteliers alike!).

To attain the aforementioned solitude, most guests try to unplug while visiting Graham & Co. For that reason, each room comes equipped with a Tivoli radio instead of a television.

The four partners in the hotel have very clearly considered every last detail. You can follow all of their exploits here.
