The 10 Best-Designed Hotels in America
Ranging from the very new to the more familiar, Dwell has assembled 10 of the best-designed hotels in America. Which properties do you think we missed? Tell us in the comments!
The Miami Beach Edition, Miami
Simplicity is king at the newest Edition hotel designed by Yabu Pushelburg, where beachfront views are complemented by light oak-paneled walls and teak lounge chairs. Glamour arrives at the hotel’s Matador Bar (collaged with vibrant photos of bullfighters) and Market restaurant, a gold-pillared “21st century food bazaar.”
Hotel Zetta, San Francisco
Inside a neoclassical building in San Francisco’s SOMA district, Hotel Zetta, by Dawson Design Associates, is simultaneously sleek and inviting. Guest rooms combine wood paneling and leather headboards with plush oriental rugs and tech-themed artwork—one room features a portrait painted on floppy disks. Downstairs, the S&R Lounge in the lobby looks like a futuristic sports lounge, with neon yellow accents.
The Line Hotel, Los Angeles
The best design aspect of The Line Hotel, conceived by designer Sean Knibb, is its floor to ceiling windows, making the palm trees and Hollywood hills a key visual component in every room. Cloth lanterns and Mexican blanket chairs accent the otherwise simple interiors. For additional details, The Line turns to a host of artist collaborators who create everything from sculptural paperweights to water color prints.
21C Museum Hotel, Cincinnati, Ohio
Named due to its proximity to the Contemporary Arts Center and Aronoff Center for the Arts in Cincinnati, 21C—designed by Deborah Berke—reflects a variety of artistic movements with Dali-esque chairs and pop art colors. It is located in the Metropole building, a local landmark built in 1912 and restored as part of its latest transformation.
The Cliff House at Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California
The most epic getaway on this list, Post Ranch Inn’s Cliff House (designed by famed local architect Mickey Muennig) overlooks the Pacific and offers 960-square-feet of glass and wood surroundings. The room comes together with purposeful angles, mirroring the ocean-side cliffs below.
