Bathroom Renovation
City: Brooklyn
State: New York
Degree of Difficulty: 5
Landlord Approval: No

Our loft was in decent shape when we started renting it, but it seemed like our landlord and previous tenants had skipped the bathroom. Our "renovation" project was hands-on and achieved mostly by using and transforming found objects.

We cut open the bathroom wall and penetrated the living room space with a refinished found cast iron tub, shielded in acid-etched glass. A steel cage suspended from the ceiling supports the glass and provides the drainage system for water from showering or bathing.

The huge sink used to be an industrial lampshade, now stripped of its dull grey paint, revealing the warm glow of solid copper. The sink drains and is supported by a sculptural plumbing system of ordinary copper pipes.

A frameless 8' glass pivoting door lets light through from the skylights in the daytime. At night, the light inside the bathroom creates a shadow-play of shower-action in the living room area.

By creating this bathroom "gem" which protrudes into our living space, our loft has taken on a completely different character.

Wonderful. Where did you find the pivot hinges for the door? I've been looking all over for something like them--
