Spruce logs constitute the upper level of the home, contrasting starkly with the white-plastered block walls of the lower level. The gravel road up to the house starts between the cement flower pots, passes the oldest house in the village, through the barn, and arrives at the newest house in the village.

The kitchen features a copper farmhouse double sink and copper faucet, a large white hutch with corresponding white range hood, and a six-burner stove with a double oven, grill, and warming oven. We had trouble finding someone to do custom cabinetry so for now we have something similar to Ikea cabinets, nevertheless in a European, no-frame style.

The refrigerator sports four compartments with white glass panels. The pantry waits behind a sliding door built from a black, metal frame and polycarbonate panels.

The pantry has custom built shelves in the dividing wall with the fridge. Test tubes with cork caps are used for individual spices.

Master bedroom. The tree trunk that supports the stairs was cut below ground level to maintain the upper roots and give the appearance of coming out of the floor. The doorway leads to a small room suitable for sleeping infants with direct access from the master bedroom.

The couch brings a touch of vibrant purple although hard to see in the picture. There is an incorporated wood stove with a marble surround. Each side of the fireplace has a floor to ceiling window, one of which serves as an access door to the backyard. The only painted walls in the house are downstairs.

Our modern log home is built into the side of a south-facing hill, where a private driveway takes you through a century-old barn up to a sweeping panorama of a quaint Romanian village. Our house is a blend of elegant, timeless furnishings; crystal and marble accents; plush carpets; bamboo hardwood floors; down feather blankets; ornate mirrors; warm lighting; and earthy textures. Wood, brick, wool, and stone building materials combine to give you a sense of harmony with nature. The open-space main floor showcases an imposing hearth fireplace accompanied by floor to ceiling windows to each side. An open loft provides a place for children to play or guests to stay the night. The entire downstairs is dedicated for use as a master suite with more floor to ceiling windows; a walk-in, his/hers closet; and a spa-style bathroom that only a picture could do it justice.
