The kitchen has two defined sections for work and socializing. Both area are well used! The backsplash is tempered glass, painted from behind in a lovely light blue of our choice.

This window was bumped out to follow the same angle as the social island. The corner faces south and is the perfect spot to grow kitchen herbs.

As a former professional chef, I love the chalkboard wall to keep notes about menus. The "nook" to the left of the refrigerator houses every day appliances--coffee machine and toaster oven.

Another look at the "nook" above the steam oven. We put lots of thought into all of the cabinet space for our well-used kitchen. Trash, recycling, compost, pots, pans, sheet pans, pantry items, etc. are all thoughtfully stored. Cabinets were made locally at Metropolitan Cabinets in Norwood MA.

We updated the kitchen in our "Brady-Bunch-style" house built in 1974. Whenever possible, we used local materials, including the oak top of our "work island", made from a tree that we needed to take down when we installed solar panels on our roof.
One of our goals was to marry the kitchen space with the family room which features a large, original circular staircase. In order to do this, we slanted our "social island" (featuring a waterfall countertop of Vermont marble) and bumped our a window at the same angle.
