Never being very handy I decided to take on a gut rehab of my condo to learn a trade and act as a catalyst for major life change. I have a computer background that allowed me to do some precise mock ups of what I wanted. I used these pictures as a blueprint for everything to come. As I was not experienced in any home remodeling when I designed the space feasibility was not really taken into account. Thus, every time I reached a new project I had to learn what materials are needed, what tools to use, how to use those tools and what codes need to be met. The design was ambitious given the price point of the area so I upcycled as much as possible. I drove 2 states away to go to a plumbing auction, spent countless hours on Facebook marketplace, visited habitat for humanity restore weekly and came up with unique uses of quality materials (look closely, the bathroom floor is pool table slate.) This allowed me to include subzero/Jenn Aire appliances, Hansgrohe fixtures, nature quartz countertops and slate floors in a $120,000 condo. It took me about 18 months and was a ton of work, but it was a lot of fun, I learned a lot and met some great people along the way. In the end I’m not sure what changed more - me or the condo.
