To reduce the amount of space needed for formal dining, the handmade walnut dining table cantilevers out of the kitchen island counter towards the living area flanked by dark toned leather dining chairs. Prior to renovation, this room contained a bedroom and full bathroom along the left wall.

The play with bright and bold colors was a large part of the design for the owner as the small hallway leading to the office and bedrooms is painted red.

To keep the site lines from the rooms entry to the exposed brick wall, the designer chose a chandelier that both accentuates the height of the space but also, due to its transparency, allows for views through it.

The designer wanted the meeting point between original and new to be bold and un hidden as pictured here. The convergence of old hardwood floors and modern kitchen island and dining table and furnishings.

As the owners both do not cook often, yet have many guests over, the oversized kitchen island stands out as white stone, while the "culinary theater", or the black recessed counter area. is more subtile and conceals the cooking equipment. The bar stools were chosen to resemble the barstools in the buildings past life as an Eckerds drug store.

What happens when you have a son who is in architecture school and the keys to a new condo? This gut renovation of a three-bedroom now one-bedroom condo on Main Street in Columbia, South Carolina began with the question: how does one renovate a condo to be modern and efficient yet retain the history of the original building? Nearly one year later, his vision is complete.

This historic building in Downtown Columbia, South Carolina was once the home to an Eckerds drugstore, and the site of a 1960's sit-in at the former lunch counter to protest racial segregation in the south. Now renovated, this home is an example of contemporary and modern design in Columbia, South Carolina that seamlessly blends old and new.
