Astrophotographer Ken Naiff’s and June Cohen’s carefully designed third-floor contemporary loft home is in Scottsdale, Arizona's first zoned live/work community. Although retired, Ken and June had in mind beautiful yet functional living areas from which they could meet and entertain clients interested in purchasing Ken’s photography for their collections.

The new space had to be conducive to his art and the creative process as well as offer a gallery-like environment for buyers of his photography. As a result, the couple turned their great room-kitchen into Manhattan-like gallery space for displaying Ken’s framed images (mingling with a carefully curated personal art collection), so clients can view them in a residential setting.

Knowing what they wanted and meticulously diagramming how each room should look, they worked with their construction team to make several modifications to the original floor plan designed by local architect Bing Hu. They replaced all the bathtubs with showers (one has a picture window) and reconfigured a second bedroom into a sleek office where Ken reviews complex data from the images he shot in the field to develop a spectacular photograph. Bright and open, the space is appealing to artist and client alike. The room has an adjoining balcony for informal client meetings or celebratory drinks after making a sale.

Upgraded, organic materials were used throughout the home such as porcelain flooring and tile because of its natural beauty and functionality, glass for the unusual kitchen backsplash, upscale wood and laminates, and metal. They also experimented with furniture fabrics to insure they were stain- and cat-proof. In addition, crisp, geometric-patterned pillows, which June found online, blend with the surroundings.

Also, the couple created a stylized waterfall pattern in the powder room floor tile that mimics the room’s backsplash and organic art pieces found throughout the 2,365-square-foot home which contributes to the overall aesthetics of the home.

Their loft is located in the SOHO Scottsdale community of lofts and townhomes located at 16510 N. 92nd St.
