From Kenton Knowles

This is a home for a Dutch couple living in Sweden and working for Ikea.

They bought an older summer house and we designed the addition and renovation on a tight budget.

They needed to move the living area and build a separate bedroom on the main floor to get a view of the yard and get access to an outdoor seating area on a wooden platform.

The solution came to us when when we decided to frame an unusual tree in their backyard in a pop-out window seat next to the woodstove.

The form grew out of the city planning requirements and the need to break out of the box in an understated way as not to upset the neighbors but to still express their Dutch-ness.

We though of it a a modern wooden shoe in form or the prow of a ship moving though the Southern Swedish landscape.

The old and new together seemed to symbolize the two cultures docking each other in a respectful way.
