Landscape Design

From Jackie Draper

This unique house is situated on 24 acres consisting of two contiguous parcels of 6 and 18 acres. The house was designed by Burr & McCallum of Williamstown MA. It received the first prize in the Biennial Andrea Palladio International Design Competition in Italy and was selected as a Record House by the editors of Architectural Record magazine in recognition of excellence in planning and design. The current configuration with two en suite bedrooms can be expanded in a variety of ways to provide more bedrooms or living space. The grounds surrounding the house were designed by notable landscape architect Dan Kiley whose stated objective was to integrate the property’s impression of wilderness with the house’s tastefully appointed civility. The house site is one of 41 projects featured in Dan Kiley – The Complete Works of America’s Master Landscape Architect by Dan Kiley and Jane Amidon. In addition, the house site is included in the national traveling exhibition, hosted in 19 cities to date, of Kiley’s work presented by the Cultural Landscape Foundation, Washington DC. This exhibition features 28 projects, including the Kennedy Library in Boston, Rockefeller University and the Ford Foundation in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Art Institute of Chicago South Garden, the St. Louis Arch and L’Esplanade du General de Gaulle at La Defense in Paris. The South Williamstown location of the property provides close proximity to South Berkshire County cultural activities, including Tanglewood, Albany NY area transportation facilities (airport and Amtrak rail station) and the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort.
