The Sand Cabins were designed by Stretch Architects and built by Knysna Timber Homes.

Stretch Architects is a South African Architecture and Design Studio based in Cape Town and Durban. Their approach to architecture is underpinned by a cyclical, iterative and playful process which is given order and structure by a deep understanding of the contextual and functional parameters of each individual project. There mission is to create buildings which, in the very least, are equal to or more beautiful than what lay before, be it in a natural or urban context. Their responsibility is to create buildings which support the well-being of its users, both now and in the future. It is our hope that they are able to create buildings which can spark joy. We do this with mindfulness, care and responsibility. The idea behind the Sand Cabins was to allow our guests to experience a space which is simply and beautifully immersed in nature: a wood cabin like no other, which lends its form to generate awe and inspiration; a space to transform ideas and feelings, where one can reconnect to belief and reconcile with the idea of magic.

‘’At its core, the three new cabins at Nima Lodge are shaped by the attempts to best marry the incredible views with the privacy one needs in order to celebrate the ritual of the everyday’’ – Stephen Hitchcock, Stretch Architects

These structures mimic the natural landscape through the choice of materials and organic shape and offer an otherworldly experience through their form and interiors. Like Sand dunes emerging from the ground, these cabins stand tall overlooking the Wilderness indigenous forest. The curvature of their design ensures that once inside, it feels as if you are completely alone. The curved walls create privacy and frame the view providing a clear and intimate experience. The interiors of the cabin have been built to bring indoors the feeling of changing landscapes where one can move seamlessly through different floor levels from the bed, to the couch in front of the indoor fire place and out to the open outside deck. The tower section of the structure houses the bathroom, keeping this space separate from the otherwise open-plan design. The towering walls of the bathroom give the enclosure a safe yet expansive feeling. It offers framed views from a drop-in bath through a large window.

The Sand Cabin features a king-size bed, full self-catering kitchen, outdoor gas braai, indoor fire place, wood-fired hot tub and exquisite views.
