SA55 is a unique project located in an area rich with history. The former linen factory, active in the 19th century, is the oldest war-surviving residential building in the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood. After being used as a summer residence, due to poor insulation and outdated technology, it was renovated in 2010 while preserving its original form and characteristics.

HAA&D offered design layout to the Penthouse and a to the Loft type apartments - converting them into modern, high-end living spaces with a new layout not only to fit today's apartment standards but also to shape open and bright areas.

The SA55 Penthouse is an 834m2-sized space abundantly filled with natural sunlight. The private rooms were separated from the main, open living space, allowing clear division between the intimate and gathering zone. The original layout was creatively adapted to the apartment's needs by introducing designed glazed walls & curtains system, providing privacy to the bedrooms while allowing the sun and long view to the surrounding balconies and beyond to penetrate the interior. Skylight windows were introduced to ventilate and to bring light deeper into the rooms also when the curtains cover the glass- wood windows. The light-coloured materials and smooth textures shape a welcoming space opening itself to the spacious surrounding outdoor areas, allowing the residents to observe the busy city life of Berlin from their peaceful haven. The predominantly used wood provides a positive psychological effect and a feeling of cosiness.

The SA55 Loft, while sharing the open space concept with the free-standing furniture of the Penthouse, stands out with a bold character.
The spotted in black white terrazzo floor underlines the elegant brown shade of the custom- designed carpentry and the dark-toned furniture.

What makes the lofts space so intriguing is the unique combination of modern layout introduced into an old traditional industrial building. Due to its well preserved, original wave-like ceiling we are reminded of the history of the place and its Old- New relationship in each room and corner.
