From Passé Présent Design Durable
Built from the end of the Second World War to house soldiers returning to the country,
veteran homes were inspired by the Cape Cod style and the Salt Box Houses. An integral part of the architectural landscape of several Montreal neighborhoods, they offer a canvas rich in history to families of today wanting to adapt them to the needs of the 21st century.
Our clients’ needs, a couple whose children have recently left home, differed from those of veterans, so to speak! A kitchen with spacious counter tops and a spacious entryway were on their wish list.
The new layout allowed us to open up the ground floor, previously composed of small narrow rooms. With minimal structural interventions, respectful of the existing built environment, we were able to highlight existing architectural elements (ex.: support columns for the load-bearing wall in the living room), and preserve the mansard ceiling on the 2nd floor.
The main bathroom of the residence was previously on the ground floor, which is a bit far considering the bedrooms are on the 2nd floor of the house... We created a 2nd floor primary suite complete with full bathroom and walk-in, all the while improving the insulation of the building’s exterior walls and adding new energy efficient windows.
Vintage items were used throughout the space: a French door from a former school closes off the home office, light fixtures sourced by Passé Présent from a flea market, an upcycled wooden counter in the bathroom.
