A waltz has eight notes of movement as well as moments of rest. The homeowner is a dance teacher and so we’ve based this 191.4 m2 space on the contrasting ideas of motion and rest. We’ve modified the original wide opening on the first floor to provide visitors with a space private enough to freely express themselves and to cool down after a long day. We also changed the color and design of the walls, storage units, and furnishings, to reflect the fluctuations between motion and rest to match pace in the life of both the home and homeowner.
The most creative elements of this design are the dance studio and living room. In the dance studio, we knew that an expanded entrance could increase privacy without disturbing the neighbors. The steel structures and large glass panes on the door complement floor length mirrors inside the studio. This dance floor feels less constrained and it also strengthens the beauty of the overall structure. This provides a private space where the restless soul of any dancer can truly be set free. In the living room we used greyscale walls and furnishings together with natural sunlight to provide visitors a moments rest. The combination of lighter colors and wooden furniture in the sitting room and on window seat brighten up this recreational space. Changes to the materials and design of the walls also capture the homeowner’s playful personality. This creates a home that reflects and supports the lifestyle of its owner.
