A simple guesthouse sits amongst mature oaks, and a modern collection of a residences’ related buildings. Situated on a steep, rural site the guesthouse is revealed along the winding private driveway. Honoring it’s own sense of place as a guest retreat¬ – the building is shifted lower and away from the main house and pool, yet is pivotal in the relationship it has with the whole project. Inside, a small living/dining, kitchenette and bathroom occupy the first floor while only the bed occupies the small sleeping loft – like a tree fort from our youth. The double height space and elongated glazing connect the interior spaces, light, and expansive views. The interior of recycled wood siding, gives the feeling of being inside a jewel box. The single gesture of Cor-Ten siding panels simultaneously camouflage, and embolden, the small structure. The materials and detailing bring a modern, craft sensibility to this rugged, rural setting.
