The Hawthorne Residence was the answer to the client’s request for a “contemporary farmhouse” in Calgary, Alberta. This house, built into the steep slope of the site, has its entry located at the basement level to avoid walking up an exterior staircase during the Canadian winter. The interior spaces are visually connected to the fir clad open tread staircase and through openings between floors. The outdoor amenity area is connected to the kitchen and nook by two folding glass doors. This house has some unique elements such as an oversized pivot entry door, a secret garden, exposed concrete flooring, rift and quarter cut oak floors and a dual swing pantry door complete with circular window.
