From ONE SEED Architecture + Interiors

Geometric House by ONE SEED Architecture + Interiors is a full gut reconfiguration and addition to a late mid-century post and beam home in North Vancouver. The uniquely angular footprint of the home responds to the site which is enveloped by tall trees from the surrounding Pacific North West forest, with a creek to the west and obliquely angled property lines. Distinctive spaces are created by the intersecting lines and extensions of the unique property. Embracing the spirit of the geometry, the additions playfully fold and change direction abruptly, always grounded in the connection to the site.

The design brief from the homeowners when they purchased this west coast modern home was for a full overhaul, as well adding additional space for their large family. The existing house had a modern 70s geometric massing, which lent itself beautifully to upgraded contemporary forms and finishes. The new additions further the geometric story by cladding distinct volumes in contrasting materials, and accentuating the interstitial space between them with a double-height glass atrium. The atrium rises above both masses allowing daylight to filter in to the dramatic entrance from three sides. In the evening the atrium glows like a lantern with a delicate pattern of window mullions.

The "full gut" renovation, was just that, maintaining only the roof and its supporting structure. Everything else was deconstructed, including the slab, and renewed. The post and beam structure was strengthened to meet seismic code, an insulated and heated slab was installed, and the interior and exterior were rebuilt with new finishes.

Moments within the Geometric House include a serene and private master suite that juts into the forest, a split-level main floor with kitchen, living and dining that spill out on to the yard and pool deck, and a covered outdoor living area nestled between the house and garden with a fire pit, built-in BBQ and outdoor kitchen. The floor to ceiling commercial glazing system allow wall, ceiling, and floor finishes to flow from the inside to out.
